Looking to entertain, inspire and educate your favorite youths during these crazy times? Maybe reading three books by Marcia Canter can make this happen? And they might get the chance to meet the author, and ask her why she wrote what she did?
That’s the idea behind her Making A Difference Book Club. She’s willing to have a book discussion virtually with a group of eight to twenty youth (4th-6th grade) who have bought and read her books, starting with Mosquito Madness. She’ll provide discussion group questions and ideas of what they can do besides looking at a screen that will make the world a better place and give them something to do.
Marcia’s books in her Postcard book series are meant to make people see problems as well as work to help solve them. While her characters go to school, have fun with friends and fights with others, they learn can make a difference. The problems they solve involve problems faraway and within their own families and communities.
The first book, Mosquito Madness, tells the story of Becca, a fifth grader, who is bored in Iowa until she receives a mysterious postcard from her aunt in Africa. When Becca learns about malaria and how it affects so many people, she takes action to help make a difference.
Her next book Postcard from Me follows Becca when she starts traveling with her aunt. Becca learns how strangers can help one another and how a community rebuilds after a natural disaster.
While Becca travels with her aunt, her friends are trying to figure out how to get to Hollywood. They figure out how to work together, deal with family strife, learn about homelessness and adapt to change in Postcards From Hollywood.
